Big props to Nida Manzoor, mastermind of one of my all-time favorite shows:
We Are Lady Parts [currently on Peacock].
I’m neither femme nor Muslim—pues por—favor, pick up my signal cuz this Brit punk band needs an uplink to your cortex. I mean it. It slaps, it shreds, it shakes you.
What’s the 411? It’s about a Muslim female punk band, Lady Parts, and their roller-coaster ride through music making, truth weaving, and life juggling. We live it through Amina Hussein’s eyes, a geeky PhD student, who is unexpectedly recruited as a lead guitarist. She’s a gem.
But listen here: music is movement in my life. It’s a crit-function. So I don’t signal loosely when I say the jams are fantastic. Manzoor wrote a rocking series and rocking music, alongside her punk-loving siblings. Yeah, it’s family bonds behind the band and you can feel it.
From righteous ragers to a cover of Radiohead that struck me right in my carbonized chestplate, this show weaves its songs directly into the soul of the story. No lip-syncing here. The cast performs, sings, rocks for real. Sometimes it’s like watching a transcendent music video, interwoven with sharp writing, dreamy visuals, and that rare energy you only get from pure, unfiltered vision.
I laughed.
I cried.
I ROARED with girl-power.
Manzoor! You done did it and I’ll be keeping my eyes on your greatness.
So worth the binge, baby.
So worth it.
